It’s Thursday. 218 people are with us today!
Hey there from a cold Dallas, TX.
When I was 29, I watched the movie Jaws for the first time. It was a strange decision at the time because I was trying to deal with a fear of sharks. You see, I was going to Maui the next month for what would be my 8th time there (I was very lucky as a child with parents who loved Maui) and I had made up my mind.
I wanted to surf.
To be fair, I had always wanted to surf. But fear stopped me. Fear of sharks. Completely ridiculous but that is the truth. I thought at any moment a shark would come up and take me under. Rip my leg to shreds. Blood all in the water. The scene of a disaster.
I would look out at all the surfers with envy. I would try to swim further out but always let fear overtake me. If I couldn’t touch the ground, I turned around.
Which takes me back to the movie Jaws. I wanted to see the very worst case. I wanted to do what Tim Ferris calls fear setting. I needed to picture the absolute worst carnage possible so I could move past it all. At 29, it was time.
1 month later, I surfed my first ever wave.
Over these past few months, as the world has been locked down, I feel the ocean, the waves, and the feeling of an early morning out on my board deep inside of me.
Fear…conquered.
Life…improved.
Performative Speaking online school reached the 1/3 mark on Wednesday. Students began publishing their first video. We finished the first portion where we focus on strategy. Now we move into the tactics. It’s an exciting time.
The best part of the course is the community. It’s unbelievable. I dreamed of a supportive and invested community. They have exceeded my wildest dreams and it is a credit to each and every one of them.
If you’re curious to get a peek behind the curtain, Paul Lecrone made an incredible short video from the first week.
I’m having a blast. And the best part is some of the incredible things being said by students!

Cohort 2 kicks off January 11. Spots will be limited. If you’re interested reach out to me by replying to this email. Or DM on Twitter.

Now for Three Things
A quick video on how to have a Go-To Story
1 take, no edit, no redo, and no prep. It’s my thing.
This visual from Jack Butcher
“The thing about a story is that you dream it as you tell it, hoping that others might then dream along with you, and in this way memory and imagination and language combine to make spirits in the head. There is the illusion of aliveness.” The Things They Carried
This week I want to shout out to a good friend of mine Cam Houser. He just launched his new course for making and using video for professionals. It’s not like your normal video course that focuses on crazy edits, high-end equipment, or making you spend hours and hours to create 1 video.
He teaches how to use an iPhone and have videos created in under an hour.
Oh, he also is a Professor at the University of Texas and has run his own company for many years. He’s an educator and also somebody who practices this stuff in real life.
Also, it doesn’t conflict with Performative Speaking. In fact, it’s a perfect companion.

Some people have reached out to me recently because they did not realize I offer private 1 on 1 coaching. I have 3 remaining spots so if your interested just reply back to this email with the words “CAP SYSTEM” and we can talk more about it.
See yall next week.
